Norbert W. Dunkel, Director of Housing
University of Florida

Norb Dunkel, currently the Director of Housing and Residence Education at the University of Florida, received his B.S. degree in Geology and his M.S. Education in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. As Director, his primary responsibilities include serving as the chief housing officer for 730 employees working within a $32.6 million budget in a system housing seven thousand five hundred single students and two thousand five hundred family members. Norb has worked at the University of Florida since 1988. He advised the Inter-Residence Hall Association for thirteen years and continues to teach a graduate course in the Department of Educational Leadership.

Before moving to Gainesville, Norb worked in residence life at a number of institutions in the Midwest, including South Dakota State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and Southern Illinois University. Norb's involvement in student life, however, extends beyond working at individual institutions. He recently co-authored with Jim Grimm the 2003 book Campus Housing Construction. He co-edited with Paul Jahr the 2000 book Peak Experiences: Innovators Who Helped Shape the Housing Profession. He co-authored the 1999 ACUHO-I Construction and Renovation monograph with Jim Grimm. He co-edited the second edition book released in 1998 titled Advice for Advisers: The Development of a Residence Hall Association. He also co-authored the 1998 Jossey-Bass book with John Schuh titled Advising Student Groups and Organizations. In addition, he has written almost forty articles in publications ranging from The College Student Affairs Journal, The Journal of College and University Student Housing, and NASPA Journal. He has served as the Editor for The Journal of College and University Student Housing and as the Associate Editor of The College Student Affairs Journal. Norb served a three-year term on the ACUHO-I Executive Board as Publications Coordinator from 1997 - 2000.

Norb has served as a consultant at over 20 universities and colleges. He has presented over 70 professional presentations at conferences and workshops on topics including construction/renovation, crisis management, writing for publication, supervision, and advising student organizations to mention a few.

An accomplished researcher, Norb has received research grants from SEAHO to conduct a national study of RHA adviser responsibilities; from SEAHO in order to coordinate the development of an instrument to determine the effectiveness of RHAs; from SACSA to administer the Student Development Task and Lifestyle Inventory; and he co-developed and administered a national study of competencies of chief housing officers which led to the co-founding of the National Housing Training Institute which he co-directed from 1991 - 2000.

In 1996, he received the regional and national Dan Hallenbeck Career Service Awards for his involvement as an RHA adviser; the 1998 Division of Student Affairs Outstanding Leadership and Service Award; the 1999 Charles W. Beene Award for Outstanding Service to SEAHO; and the 1999 Adviser of the Year Award from SAACURH and the University of Florida. In 2001 he received the ACUHO-I Research and Publication Award.
