Description:
You can’t escape Social Media, and it is not going away. Now is the time to discover what it is and how to use it effectively to promote and enhance your events. Participants will create their own social media sites as part of the class.

Outline:
  • Overview of Social Media
    What Social Media is, how event professionals are using the tools to increase public awareness and market to potential clients.
  • Blogs, Blog Aggregator Sites
    Participants will create a blog related to the industry
  • Twitter
    Participants will create a Twitter account and amass 1000 followers. Twitter Applications; TweetDeck, etc.
  • Facebook and LinkedIn
    Participants create pages on both platforms
  • YouTube, Flickr, Picassa, Online Photo Editing
    Participants will create a photo or video presence on one of the platforms
  • Listservs, Forums
    Participants will join a listserv and participate. Students will also create a listserv on either Yahoo or Google Groups.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain what Social Media is (what)
  • Describe why Social Media should be used (why)
  • Create a presence on Social Media (how)
Participant Expectations:
Participants should plan to spend approximately 3 to 4 hours per week in this course. This will include time to read materials, complete on-line exercises and surveys and participate in asynchronous on-line discussions. Participants will need to log on for course content that will be posted weekly. In addition participants will need to respond to questions posted on the discussion board each week. As the discussion board is asynchronous, students may check in and post at their convenience. This learning tool will be an important part of participant's learning experience.

Instructor Bio:
Patti Shock is a professor and serves as the Director of Distance Learning in the Harrah Hotel College at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She teaches catering, convention management and social media on-campus and online.

She is a frequent speaker at hospitality and meeting conferences. She has co-authored five books, including A Meeting Planner’s Guide to Catered Events.

She developed the first university curriculum in meeting management in the late 1970s while at Georgia State University. At UNLV, she chaired the Tourism and Convention Administration Department for 18 years.

She has received numerous recognitions, including the Lifetime Professional Achievement Award from the Professional Convention Management Association, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association for Exposition Management, and the Achievement Award from the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education. She was named one of the 10 most powerful women in the meetings industry by Successful Meetings magazine, one of the 25 most influential people in the convention industry by Meeting News magazine and one of the most influential women in Southern Nevada by InBusiness Las Vegas.
